Kate Abdo used her Spanish skills to reveal that Lionel Messi appeared to cheekily call Jamie Carragher a donkey in a direct message on Instagram.

The Liverpool legend returned to CBS Sports' coverage of the Champions League on Tuesday night where he boasted the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner is in his DMs.

Carragher, along with presenter Abdo, as well co-pundits Thierry Henry and Micah Richards often conjure up hilarious moments when they're all together, with Carragher this time the butt of the joke.

Speaking to Richards, he claimed to have received a DM on Instagram from Argentina World Cup winner Messi.

"Is it Spanish that they speak, Argentinians?" he asked to the rest of the panel.

"I'm just going to say the word he called me, I don't understand. A 'burro', he called me a 'burro'".

After Richard asked what that meant, Abdo confirmed: "Donkey."

"Donkey, thank you," said Carragher with a wry smile on his face, with the rest of the team laughing at the insult.

Carragher previously revealed that he received such a message from Messi after he criticised the World Cup winner.

"It was on Monday Night Football and I got a private message on Instagram," he said at the beginning of 2022.

"From the man [Messi] himself. I will not be showing private messages but he basically called me a donkey."

Carragher did not think Messi had been a great signing for Paris Saint-Germain during his first season at the club.

However, given his 11 goals in 11 games for Inter Miami thus far, it's unlikely he will question the Argentinian again, especially after their previous interaction.
