‘I wasn’t prepared for that’ – Ben Stokes stunned into silence by press conference question amid England’s ‘crap’ World Cup

Ben Stokes was unable to muster a response when asked if anything funny has happened during England's dreadful Cricket World Cup.

England's hopes of reaching the semi-finals are all but over with three matches left to play, and legend Michael Vaughan has described their campaign as 'one of the worst' in their history.

Hosts India were the latest side to beat them as they won by 100 runs on Sunday, with England now on course for an early exit.

Stokes starred in their 2019 victory, but has little to celebrate this time round, and this was apparent to see in his press conference.

Speaking on Friday ahead of England's clash against Australia, he was asked whether there have been any funny moments during their tour.

However, captain Stokes sat in silence for around seven seconds before he eventually said: "Erm... Sorry I wasn't prepared for that question."

Then with a cheeky grin, he added: "Ask me again tomorrow and then I'll have something then for you."

Earlier on in the press conference, he was asked if one of England's problems was not being able to figure out what's gone wrong.

Stokes disagreed with the sentiment though, as he simply stated: "No I think the problem is, is that we've been crap."

The 32-year-old is set to undergo surgery after England's World Cup campaign has concluded to address a long-term knee problem.

He has been unable to bowl during the tour in India and has just played as a batter, with Stokes also missing the first three matches due to an issue with his hip.

England face third-placed Australia on Saturday before coming up against the Netherlands four days later.

Semi-final chasers Pakistan are their final test of the World Cup - a tournament that English cricket fans will surely be keen to forget.
