Now, Wembanyama's game-worn San Antonio Spurs jersey from his NBA debut has fetched almost £1 million via Sotheby's, according to Darren Rovell.

The official title for the completed auction was "Victor Wembanyama 'Rookie Debut Game' San Antonio Spurs Game Worn Home Jersey."

Listed as "property from the National Basketball Association," the white No. 1 jersey was given an estimated value of $80,000 to $120,000.

It sold for significantly more than that, topping similar game-worn jerseys from LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Stephen Curry.

"How do people have money like this lol," one fan posted.

"How much did wemby sell it for?" another fan joked.

"Wore in 2nd half. Hopefully kept the 1st one," a third fan suggested.

While the young Spurs are 3-11 and struggling at the start of the 2023-24 seasons, Wemby's early NBA run has been fantastic.

He's been praised by Tom Brady and Durant, scored 38 points in a game, and has more than lived up to his pre-draft hype.

The 7ft 4in Wembanyama, a native of France, is averaging 18.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 2.5 assists in just 29.9 minutes.

During his NBA debut on October 26, Wemby scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists and recorded two steals in a 126-119 home defeat to the Dallas Mavericks.

The buyer of Wembanyama's already famous No. 1 jersey clearly saw nothing but financial upside in the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 draft.

"Everybody’s been a unicorn over the last few years," James was quoted in the auction listing. "But he’s more like an alien -- no one has seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and as graceful as he is on the floor.”

Sotheby's definitely bought into Wemby-mania, linking the young Spur with The King.

"In a short amount of time, the hype appears to be warranted, with Wemby performing incredible dunks, passes, and blocked shots with just a few games under his belt in the NBA," the auction listing said.

"This jersey is a generational opportunity to own an iconic piece of the Wemby story."
