On Sunday, the Metropolitan Police said a number of arrests had been made throughout the course of the day, including a supporter who was seen wearing an offensive t-shirt.

A statement read: "James White, 33 (22.01.90), of Warwickshire was charged on Sunday, 4 June with displaying threatening or abusive writing likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

"He was bailed to appear at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Monday, 19 June.

"He was arrested after being seen wearing a shirt which appeared to refer in offensive terms to those who died in the Hillsborough tragedy.

"Criminal proceedings are active and the defendants has the right to a fair trial. There should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.

"A further 22 people were arrested during the course of the policing operation for offences including assault, affray, possession of drugs and drunk and disorderly behaviour.

"Enquiries continue in respect of an item thrown onto the pitch shortly after the Manchester United goal. There has been no arrest at this stage in relation to that matter."

The match was won 2-1 by City thanks to an Ilkay Gundogan double either side of a Bruno Fernandes penalty.

Tensions were high with it being the first-ever Manchester derby in an FA Cup final, while United had the chance to end City’s hopes of matching their 1999 European treble that also included the FA Cup.

They were unable to do that, though, and Pep Guardiola’s side are now huge favourites to become only the second English side to achieve the feat when they face Inter in the Champions League final.

Liverpool, meanwhile, lay claim to being the first English side to win the treble when their haul included the league, European Cup and League Cup in 1984.

Defeat for United meant they end the season with just the Carabao Cup to their name, but that’s not an achievement to be sniffed at considering they had gone five years without a trophy.

In his first season as manager, Erik ten Hag also brought the team back to the Champions League, finishing third in the Premier League.

But their final match of the season still left a bitter taste in the mouth, and fans from either side took things too far after the final whistle.
