12.05: Betfair Racing Podcasts Newton Novices' Hurdle (Grade 2)

It's not just the Betfair Chase on Saturday either, racing fans are in for a treat to the Grade 2 Novices' Hurdle as the opener of the day at Haydock.

There's some promising hurdlers in this with 13 runners still entered into this.

Trainer Fergal O'Brien has Kamsinas in this with a 128 overall rating, who has already placed in Grade 2 novice company.

The gelding won well on hurdling debut in October and just 15 days after came a close second to Lookaway at Cheltenham in the Sky Bet Novices' Hurdle.

That's great form too as Lookaway went on to place in handicap company behind Iberico Lord.

12.40: Betting.Betfair.com Handicap Chase

There's also a high rated handicap chase considering it's a Class 3.

With prominent chasers set to feature, including Cheddleton, Mackenberg and Pay The Piper.

Cheddleton is also an early contender in the Graduation Chase and there's certainly more money at stake for a win in the latter race, but is 2m5f instead of 2m.

1.15: Best Odds On The Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle (Class 2)

Langer Dan is the top-rated horse in the Class 2 Handicap Hurdle having previously won the Coral Cup at Cheltenham Festival.

He could be opposed though after really struggling on his seasonal debut.

There could be quite a few runners in this which will certainly open up the betting for some each-way plays.

Irish Hill could be on the up after a wind op in August and he reappeared at Kempton on the 13th of this month, and is on a dangerous mark now having potentially needed the run for both the season and to get used to breathing differently since the operation.

1.50: Betfair Exchange Graduation Chase (Class 2)

Grey Dawning is the strong odds-on favourite for the Graduation Chase,

However, the Challenge Cup winner, Gaillard Du Mesnil, trained by Willie Mullins looks superior despite carrying the top weight.

He has the stamina, shown by placing third in the Grand National and of course winning the 2m6f Challenge Cup at Cheltenham Festival.

It's very interesting to see him go back down in trip for the opening of the season, with entries here and in the Grade 1 2m4f Punchestown Chase on Sunday.

2.20: Betfair 'Serial Winners' Stayers' Handicap Hurdle (Class 1)

The Stayers' Handicap Hurdle is a tough contest which offers a huge £71k in prize money for the winner.

The Emmet Mullins-trained Slate Lane could still be weighted well having won three in a row, but there's many each-way chances too while there are still declarations to be made.

However, Crambo, trained by Fergal O'Brien is just about the favourite at 3/1.

He's now four wins from six runs over hurdles having beaten Santos Blue by over two lengths.

Despite running with a weight of 11-9, he was still far ahead of the majority of the field and any similarly rated rivals, like Kitty's Light, Lac De Constance and Hourvari.

That suggests he could be on the up this season as he made it a comfortable victory, having already won in Grade 3 company in March at Sandown.

3.00: Betfair Chase (Grade 1)

The big event though is of course the Grade 1 Betfair Chase.

Bravemansgame and Protektorat are the big favourites for the race and it's the former who is slowly attracting more attention in the market.

Shishkin is an early entrant but he is likely to be heading to Ascot instead for the potentially more suitable 1965 Chase.

Bravemansgame won the King George VI Chase in December and hasn't won since.

But he has ran with great credit in his last three contests.

The eight-year-old was second on seasonal debut earlier this month but looks as though he bumped into a promising chaser who was only running for his third time over fences.
