Ascot betting tips

12.50: The Carpenter & Monviel exacta (NAP - 2pts)

The Carpenter makes his highly anticipated chase start on Friday afternoon and is already fancied ahead of Monviel, Samarrive and Supreme Gift who have small experiences over fences already.

Samarrive really struggled making his chase debut last year - falling before placing third of three at Kempton, by a huge distance and also didn't impress enough over hurdles in February and April to suggest he can go better here off top-weight.

Monviel should improve and he's got a nice low weight to run off having placed well behind JPR One, who despite unseated his rider at Cheltenham's Grade 2 Novice Chase, was upped 11lb by the handicapper.

He steps up from 2m to 2m3f for the first time and that may prompt more improvement.

3.10: Tea Clipper 5/2 (1pt)

Has only won once over fences before but has been in the top contests before that, which can excuse his wide margin finishes.

He's dropped down 11lb since his sixth place in the Ultima, which wasn't an awful run by any means in such a tough contest.

The same can be said over 3m4f in the bet365 Gold Cup a month later, where he was eighth but only 19 lengths off of Kitty's Light.

Though off top-weight he did struggle in handicap company in May.

But that second to the top Stolen Silver was encouraging last month and he should be tough to beat here if running to previous form.

Catterick betting tips

12.40: Union Flag 15/8 (1pt)

Union Flag was a very close third at Cork on his hurdle debut in October and then switched hands from Noel Meade to Donald McCain.

He was quickly sent for his first run for his new trainer and won with plenty in hand in a Class 2 hurdle under Brian Hughes, by six lengths.

He should progress on from that run too, as he still made the odd mistake over hurdles and didn't look overly focused on the run-in but that suggests he has plenty more on offer and the tongue tie will help with that too.

1.50: Geromino 4/1 (1pt)

Second to Homme Public at Wetherby in October which has worked out incredibly well as the winner went on to secure victory in the Grade 2 Arkle Challenge Trophy Trial at Cheltenham last weekend.

Geromino will need to win this off top-weight but he came close in September behind Cedar Hill doing just that and it still seems that he is yet to put his best performance in having dropped down from a rating of 138 to 131.

Fairyhouse betting tips

12.55: Mister Policeman 4/7 (2pts)

Mister Policeman made his Irish debut and first start for Willie Mullins at Cork in April, as the even money favourite and won nicely by just over two lengths ahead of Cash Back.

Cash Back ran off a mark of 142 and winning that comfortably ahead of that kind of a hurdler bodes quite well for his first start over fences.

It's another Rich Ricci-owned horse trained by Mullins and ridden by the in-form Paul Townend.
