Haydock’s Betfair Chase betting: Top 2023 Betfair Chase odds and tips

There is no doubt that the jumps season is now well and truly in full swing, with the first Grade 1 race of the season and one of the biggest races of the year set to take place at Haydock Park on Saturday, the Grade 1 Betfair Chase.

Run over three miles and one and a half furlongs, the Betfair Chase is the opening race of the jumps ‘triple crown’, which is followed by the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park and brought to a close with the biggest prize of all, the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Some of the biggest names in jumps racing have won the Betfair Chase since it was established in 2005, including Cheltenham Gold Cup heroes Kauto Star, Imperial Commander and A Plus Tard.

The Dan Skelton-trained Protektorat will be bidding to win back-to-back renewals of the Betfair Chase on Saturday afternoon, but he will have to defeat a top-class field if he is to do it. We’ve taken a look at all of the Betfair Chase odds and Betfair Chase betting offers to give you a head start to this weekend’s big race with this handy guide.

Our top Betfair Chase betting tip

The Betfair Chase is the first big test of the season for chasers with aspirations of winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, with this race around half a furlong shy of the distance of the Cheltenham Festival showpiece next March.

All four runners in the field would have seriously strong claims on their best form and this is likely to be a very tight race. However, we think that last year’s winner will take all the beating.

Back PROTEKTORAT to win at 2/1 with bet365

With Shishkin headed to Ascot on Saturday for the 1965 Chase, this could boil down to a straight scrap between two of the triple crown winners from last season, last year’s Betfair Chase winner Protektorat and the King George hero Bravemansgame.

The latter will almost certainly strip fitter for his effort to finish second in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby earlier this month and will be a huge threat here, but he may have to settle for the runners-up berth once again - with regular partner Harry Cobden opting to head to Ascot.

Protektorat was nothing short of dazzling when winning this first-time out in similar conditions 12 months ago and while he was behind Bravemansgame in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last March, he has shown he’s more than capable of handling attritional conditions.

This is a big plus with heavy ground expected on Saturday and there’s no doubt that Dan Skelton will have his charge ready for this. If he can replicate the form of his win here last year, he is very much the one to beat.

🏆 Back Protektorat to win the race at 2/1 with bet365 🏆

Who are the most prominent contenders for the 2023 Betfair Chase race?

This year’s renewal of the Grade 1 Betfair Chase looks set to be a cracker, with last year’s winner Protektorat set to lock horns with the King George VI Chase hero and Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Bravemansgame. With each of the fire runners having some sort of chance of victory according to the Betfair Chase betting odds, we’ve looked at each of their chances below.

Protektorat, 2/1 with bet365 (Trainer: Dan Skelton, Jockey: Harry Skelton)

A brilliant winner of this race 12 months ago, who is bidding to become the first back-to-back winner of the Betfair Chase since Bristol De Mai in 2017 and 2018.

He was in supreme form here last year, though he didn’t quite reach those levels in two subsequent starts, finishing fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup – three places behind the re-opposing Bravemansgame.

This track seems to bring out the best in him however and having proven that he can both handle the forecast heavy ground and run well fresh, he rates as the one to beat for Dan Skelton.

🏇 Bet on Protektorat to win the race at 2/1 with bet365 🏇

Bravemansgame, 5/6 with Unibet (Trainer: Paul Nicholls, Jockey: Daryl Jacob)

A top-class chaser on his day, winning last season’s King George VI Chase in stunning style at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, defeating the re-opposing Royale Pagaille by 14 lengths.

He backed that up with a fine effort to finish second behind Galopin Des Champs in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and while he could only fill the same position on return in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby earlier this month, he will strip fitter for that excursion.

Regular partner Harry Cobden heads to Ascot, though Daryl Jacob rates as a fine deputy and Bravemansgame is a huge threat with race fitness on his side.

🏇 Pick Bravemansgame at 5/6 with Unibet 🏇

Royale Pagaille, 9/1 with 888sport (Trainer: Venetia Williams, Jockey: Charlie Deutsch)

A top-class chaser on his day and a regular in the big races in the staying chase circuit. He was winless in three starts last term but performed with great credit, finishing second in the King George VI Chase at Kempton and a noble sixth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

He seems to come alive at this track and has produced his best form here, winning back-to-back renewals of the Grade 2 Peter Marsh Chase with supreme weight-carrying performances. Heavy ground is his forte and he isn’t one to chalk off should the rain continue to fall – though his record first time out is a mixed one.

🏇 Choose Royale Pagaille at 9/1 with 888sport 🏇

Corach Rambler, 11/1 with William Hill (Trainer: Lucinda Russell, Jockey: Derek Fox)

A brilliant winner of last year’s Grand National at Aintree, who is getting a well-deserved crack at a Grade 1 contest.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to break out of handicap company and into this kind of level, but his victories at both Aintree and the Cheltenham Festival last term were bordering on top-class and he’s certainly deserving of his place.

He should arrive here fit after a pipe-opener at Kelso in October and having won on heavy ground in the past, he’s a fascinating contender for Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore.

🏇 Pick Corach Rambler at 11/1 with William Hill 🏇

Which jockey and trainer have been the most successful in the Betfair Chase?

The Betfair Chase is one of the more recent marquee events on the jumps racing calendar, being registered as the Lancashire Chase back in 2005. It has quickly become one of the best chases around however, with some excellent winners since then.

The 14-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls has a fabulous record in the Betfair Chase, winning the race on six occasions. Nicholls’ record six Betfair Chase wins have come courtesy of four victories with the great Kauto Star (who won it in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011) and two wins with Silvianaco Conti (in 2012 and 2014).

The most successful Betfair Chase jockey is Ruby Walsh, who now works as a pundit for Racing TV, RTE and ITV Racing. Walsh won the Betfair Chase on four occasions during his career, with those victories coming through Kauto Star (in 2006, 2009 and 2011) and Silvianaco Conti (in 2012).

What type of race is the Betfair Chase?

The Betfair Chase is one of the most prestigious races in the jumps racing calendar. It is the first Grade 1 contest of the jumps season and is run over a distance of three miles and one and a half furlongs. The race distance is around half a furlong shy of the Cheltenham Gold Cup distance, making it a key trial for the blue riband race at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

The race is a staying chase and acts as the first part of jumps racing’s staying chase ‘triple crown’, which is followed by the King George VI Chase at Kempton and the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Which racecourse is the Betfair Chase held on?

The Betfair Chase is traditionally run at the end of November and is held at Haydock Park in Merseyside. Although registered as the Lancashire Chase, the race has been sponsored by Betfair since its inception and has been won by some superstars since its creation in 2005.

The Betfair Chase is the first Grade 1 race of the British jumps season and previous winners of the race include greats such as Kauto Star, Silviniaco Conti and Cue Card.
