Manchester City and Liverpool have been the two best teams in the Premier League over the last few seasons. And right now, they are the top two in the division once again.
City are one point clear at the summit of the standings ahead of gameweek 13. Liverpool sit second, level on points with Arsenal on third but with a superior goal difference.
Jurgen Klopp must feel slightly hard done by that he has had to compete with Pep Guardiola’s side since 2016.
Liverpool have regularly racked up 90+ points in the Premier League, while they have reached three Champions League finals under Klopp, yet they have still only won one title in this period.
Last season did not go well at Anfield, leading some to ponder whether Klopp had taken the club as far as he could.
Liverpool were already out of the title race in November of last year and they were not even able to finish in the top four.
But a sense of optimism has returned to Anfield over the last few months. It started with some successful work in the summer transfer window, as Liverpool regenerated their midfield with the additions of Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.
And the mood has remained bright given their start to the season. Liverpool have won eight and drawn three of their 12 league games to date. They are still in the EFL Cup and are on the verge of advancing to the knockout stage of the Europa League.
Make no mistake, though: Saturday’s showdown at the Etihad Stadium is their biggest test yet. A positive result against Manchester City would confirm Liverpool’s status as serious title contenders once more.
